Launching the Youth Phambassador Program: Preparing the Next Generation of Hospitality Leaders

This summer, the Philadelphia Visitor Center proudly launched its inaugural Youth Phambassador Program, an exciting new initiative designed to engage and inspire the next generation of hospitality professionals and civic ambassadors. Developed in partnership with the Temple University Lenfest Center, the six-week paid summer work experience welcomed 14 students from Saints Neumann Goretti High School and various Philadelphia-area high schools.

As Youth Phambassadors, students serve as greeters and visitor service representatives stationed throughout Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation locations, including LOVE Park, the Independence Visitor Center, and City Hall. In these public-facing roles, students help create a welcoming and informative experience for Philadelphia’s visitors and local community members. Through their daily interactions at some of Philadelphia’s most iconic locations, Youth Phambassadors play an important role in showcasing the city’s hospitality while helping visitors feel welcomed, informed, and connected to Philadelphia.

The Youth Phambassador Program was created to provide students with far more than a traditional summer job. Through immersive, hands-on experiences, participants are developing professional skills, building confidence, exploring career pathways, and gaining a deeper appreciation for Philadelphia’s rich history, culture, and hospitality industry. The program equips students with the tools they need to become welcoming representatives of our city while preparing them for future educational and professional opportunities.

Building a Strong Foundation

The program began with training that prepares students to confidently engage with visitors from around the world. Throughout onboarding, participants receive instructions in:

  • Greeter training and visitor engagement
  • Customer service excellence
  • Emergency preparedness and contingency response
  • Wayfinding and city navigation
  • Professional communication and conflict de-escalation

To help students become familiar with Philadelphia’s landmarks and visitor experience, they participate in immersive learning activities, including riding the PHLASH bus, a guided walking tour from the Independence Visitor Center to City Hall and LOVE Park, sampling food from local vendors at Reading Terminal Market, and touring Philadelphia City Hall, including an unforgettable trip to the top of its iconic tower.

Beyond operational training, students benefited from presentations by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, which introduced concepts of cultural diplomacy and global engagement, as well as Bancroft Training, helping them strengthen workplace readiness, communication, and professional skills.

Learning Through Real-World Experience

Once training was complete, students transitioned from the “classroom” to the front lines of Philadelphia hospitality.

Throughout the summer, Youth Phambassadors are stationed in the heart of Old City during one of the city’s busiest tourism seasons. They assist visitors attending FIFA-related events, Wawa Welcome America celebrations, Fourth of July festivities, and activities throughout Independence Mall, providing directions, answering questions, and creating memorable first impressions for guests from across the country and around the world.

Students also learn alongside experienced Philadelphia Visitor Center Phambassadors, gaining valuable mentorship and firsthand experience in delivering exceptional visitor services. They attended the FIFA Fan Festival, giving them the opportunity to experience one of Philadelphia’s premier international events from both a visitor and hospitality perspective. Although plans to participate in the July 3 parade carrying a large replica of the U.S. Constitution were unfortunately canceled, the students have enthusiastically embraced every opportunity to be part of Philadelphia’s vibrant summer celebrations.

The experience extends beyond the workplace. As a special thank-you for their dedication, students received complimentary tickets to attend a Philadelphia Phillies game, where they joined the Philadelphia Visitor Center’s adult volunteer team in a dedicated section at Citizens Bank Park. The outing provided an opportunity for students, volunteers, and staff to connect outside of the workplace while celebrating one of Philadelphia’s favorite summer traditions. It also strengthened the sense of community that is at the heart of the program.

Dedicated Leadership and Mentorship

Supporting the students throughout the summer are three dedicated supervisors who provide daily coaching, mentorship, and professional guidance.

Supervisors lead greeter onboarding and training sessions, conduct regular one-on-one coaching meetings with each participant, evaluate performance through ongoing observations and spot checks, monitor service quality, manage guest and safety incidents, coordinate communication with the Philadelphia Visitor Center, Temple University Lenfest Center, and JEVS, facilitate weekly debrief sessions, and oversee emergency preparedness training and drills. Through individualized coaching and continuous feedback, supervisors help students build confidence, strengthen their customer service skills, and develop the professionalism expected in hospitality and visitor services.

Looking Ahead

The learning doesn’t stop with visitor services.

During the remainder of the program, students will participate in professional development days hosted by Temple University’s Lenfest Center, offering additional opportunities for career exploration, leadership development, and workforce readiness.

Participants will also enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of Philadelphia’s hospitality venues, where they will meet industry professionals and gain insight into careers across tourism, hospitality, and visitor services. They will hear from accomplished guest speakers who will share their career journeys, leadership experiences, and advice for success, providing inspiration and valuable networking opportunities as students begin to envision their own futures.

The Philadelphia Visitor Center is proud to invest in these young leaders and looks forward to watching them continue to grow throughout the summer and beyond!
