Jon McCann
The Philly Captain
On August 2, 2023, Philly content creator Jon McCann (@philly_captain) posted a quick video with a simple ask: stop booing Phillies shortstop Trea Turner and give the guy a standing ovation instead.
Turner was in a slump. McCann, who’s struggled with his own mental health, saw a player who looked “really depressed.” So he asked fans to show Turner some love.
So they did. Turner got standing ovations, hit a go-ahead homer, and helped turn the season around. That act of kindness? It became The Turnaround – a Netflix short film produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. It just won a Sports Emmy.
“I just wanted Trea to feel supported,” Jon says. “If he’d gotten booed that weekend, I didn’t think we’d make the playoffs.”
Known online as “The Philly Captain,” McCann has been giving virtual tours of Philadelphia for years, via creation of 5,000-plus YouTube and Insta videos that show the grit, grime, glory, and goofiness of the city he loves almost as much as he loves his beloved Fightin’s.
He might not be a “’professional tour guide,” but he’s something better: a guy who shows up for this town, thick or thin, slump or jump. Every day.
