Philly Phundamentals
For October 2026’s first Philly Phundamentals webinar, the Pham explored the legacy of Rocky Balboa and the Philadelphia sports heritage that reflects the city’s enduring underdog spirit. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original Rocky film, the webinar highlighted the connection between Philadelphia’s sports identity, its cultural legacy, and its reputation as a world-class destination.
The webinar featured Maita Soukup, Vice President of Experience & Engagement at the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation; Dr. James Robinson from We Venture Tours; and Kathryn Ott Lovell, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation. Together, they explored Philadelphia’s sports history, the stories behind its iconic sports heroes, and the significance of the Rocky legacy in shaping how the world experiences the city.
The presentation from Dr. James Robinson traced Philadelphia’s rich sports history, from the rise of baseball and rowing in the 19th century to the city’s longstanding boxing culture and the development of its professional sports teams. Highlights included the Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies, the Negro League’s Philadelphia Stars, boxing legends Joe Frazier and Rocky Marciano, and the championship legacies of the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers. The presentation also explored how neighborhood gyms and historic sporting venues helped shape Philadelphia’s working-class identity and enduring underdog spirit, providing the real-life inspiration behind the Rocky legacy.
The conversation celebrated the connection between Philadelphia’s underdog spirit, its rich sports heritage, and the global recognition inspired by Rocky. As Philadelphia marks the film’s 50th anniversary with Rocky Season 2026, the celebration offers an opportunity for Phambassadors to share the stories, landmarks, and sporting traditions that help make Philadelphia a memorable destination for visitors.
